    Poem Commentary

    THE DREAM OF A MAN ASLEEP BROUGHT HIM FACE-TO-FACE WITH A THREATENING DEMON. FORTUNATELY A THIN VOICE, MORE ANGELIC WAS AROUND TO CARE AND GUIDE. HE THOUGHT HE SAW FINALLY THE DANGER OF HELL.

    AN INCH TO HELL ?

    Again I heard the nearby call
    It kept inviting from the wall
    "Come-on boy,make for the hall
    I am the demon of your soul,
    to spell your doom now is my goal!"
    Some counter-voice then tells me "No,
    do not budge and do not go."
    'Which' to obey I did not know
    The next to come was vertigo
    Given-birth-to by a nasty blow
    I thought my last cry was simply "Oh!"
    My vision dwindled as down I fell
    But for the ringing of a distant bell,
    I'd have seen the flames of hell;
    for I was just an 'inch to Fatal Hell.'

    Smoothly rhymed, fiercely relatable. I've had my own bouts with hell; thank God it came through nature's motion pictures--dreams. Like the flow and the I-centered tone. AF l

    Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
