    Poem Commentary

    We have been reading "Antigone", a book about a girl who buries her traitor brother even after her king uncle bans anyone to do so... in the end she is sentence to death, but she hangs herself before hand, giving both her and her brother honor even in death...

    Antigone's Hands

     Oh, what fainess can be found
    in an old man's decree?
    For it is not fair to the soul
    of yonder Polyneices!
    Yes, true, against his country
    he did fight,
    but what of every
    dead man's rights??
    To be buried,
    his soul intact
    to be honored sir, but
    does the king decree that?
    NO! HE bans these hands
    to grieve, to bury
    their brother as
    they did Eteocles!
    They shake in fury at
    the old king's back,
    to the hate he shows
    and the respect he lacks!
    What fairness can be found
    in an old man's decree??
    So much less can be found,
    so these hands DO grieve...
    Sprinkle upon my warrior brother
    the dusts of of his homeland...
    And three times, round him,
    does this wine fall to the sands...
    Then these hands shake
    at the old kings back
    for the honor they give
    in spite of the man...
