Coffee

Coffee

Every morning sees boiling water poured upon cool, arid crumbs of clay
And once the steam clears to reveal that day’s strength too much or few either way,
Marvels at how the pungent vapours are enough to send the creator shooting next door,
Where he disposes of the skipped breakfast, fast lunch and burnt supper of the day before.

Half asleep, he welcomes the icy seat
And sits until his thighs are numb-
Contemplates needless snippets of retreat
Until he returns to a mug as earthly cold as his feet
And flicks the kettle again with an unwashed thumb.

Haha, this one's VERY honest, a bit disgusting really! So naturally, I'm glad it raised a smile!

Simple yet technically fabulous. The rhythm and rhyming scheme were effortless and flowed with incredible ease from one line to the next. The unconventional format was a brilliant compliment to the unorthodox subject matter. Bravo!

Hi there Narrator! Thanks for stopping by :) Yes, I enjoyed creating this "unorthodox" subject matter profusely, and the comments that have ensured even more so! Unusual rhyme schemes get me excited, so I am so glad one was appreciated here. Thanks again ~ Arron

Hey, thanks for taking the time to read and comment! Probably not everybody's taste, but I like to write about things that seem both very ordinary, such as the smell of coffee, and yet at the same time seem quite unorthodox as a poetic subject, such as the effect it has upon, ahem, my bowels... Anyroad, thanks again, your comment(s) are very much apprectiated!

Haha, don't know about you, but the sheer smell of a brewing coffee makes me want to, well, as it says, "dispose..." Cheers WS!

Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
