Diamonds are not forever

Diamonds are not forever

Diamonds are not forever

Do you know, what a young man will do
Just so, you may wear some baling or two.

Stooped low, knee deep in muddy rivers, he will go
Digging in the wilting heat, just so he may eat.

A stipend of only seven cents a day, barely enough
To get himself a bowl of porridge, to see him through the day

And yet he returns each morning, and begins another day
To continue his relentless digging, for the diamond, that might come his way.

It is a chance for a better tomorrow, no matter what anyone says,
He is oldest of six children; three have already died from disease.

He will keep hunting for the one thing that could transform his life
Moreover, the lives of his family and village and finally set them free.

For much of his families future rests on his prospects.
He knows it will not be easy, but he has to do what he can.

It is amazing that when I read the above verses and then the words you have bracketed off........I talk to myself and ask myself is this what greed does? My mom had that right?

Very poignant description of the true representation and effect that a capitalistic society has on the mass majority of the global population. I wished that a lot more people felt the same way as you Mareann.

This is astonishing! The whole world needs to realize this! I knew about it before, but every time I hear this it's like a swift punch in the gut!!!...This world is full of sorrow, Good job, and the way you wrote this is attention getting! Thanks for reminding us about the price some people pay...for a bowl of soup........and others for a diamond. Sicking!

Thank for reading and commenting, it means more than you know, mareann

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
