Do You Remember?

Poem Commentary

Well I had to do something for 9-11, I couldn't let the day pass without writing something. It may not sound very "poetic'' but it doesn't matter. May all the victims and their families never be forgotten. As well as all the first responders. Never forgotten...

Do You Remember?

Where were you that September day,

eleven years ago?

Do you remember what you felt

or is it all just a blur to you now?

Did you drop to your knees right there

and pray as you watched the smoke pour into the sky?

Or did you hold some stranger's hand

as you passed them on the street?

Maybe you can't remember what it was like that day

but you know it's always in your heart.

I see the kids holding flags to the sky

as they honor the people who died.

While they silently say a prayer,

for the kids who lost their parents that day,

a tear runs down my face as I stare

at the empty space

in that child's eyes.

Do you remember where in the world

you were,

when the story came on the radio?

Were you driving to work

or hugging your children goodbye

as they rushed off to school?

Can you remember the look on the faces of the people

you passed by on that day?

Did you even notice the tears

forming in their eyes?

I pray for the teachers who had to tell their kids

many people had died.

I see the flags strongly flapping in the wind,

full of pride and honor.

People are walking around

dressed in red, white, and blue,

while others are dressed all in black,

as they mourn for the people who were lost.

It's hard not to sit here and feel your heart ache

as you remember that day like it was yesterday.

Even though I was a kid then,

it's all clear as day.

So tonight as you peacefully fall asleep

try to remember what you felt the day

the world was no longer the same.

Do you remember it at all?

Or have you just forgotten...?

Very well written. My 911 poem was as if an answer to this question. I do remember exactly what I was doing. I was really young then too. Very poignant memoir to 911. Well done.

Nice work , sk8erpoet. 9/11/01 was a heartbreaking day that I will never forget. Not ever. The best way we can honor those lost is to never forget them. Well done.

I was in second grade, we were practicing cursive, another teacher (Ms Downing I think) walked calmly in the room, flipped on a TV hanging in the corner and turned it to the local cable news. As the class stared out at the teachers a plain hit the south tower. I did pray for them (once I prosessed what happened). I do not remember 99% of my childhood due to a brain surgery 5 years ago but this I remember almost perfectly. . . No I have not forgoten the nearly 3,000 dead 343 of them firemen just like my dad, my mom helped build one of those planes...

I was in kindergarten, I don't remember it very well. I just remember coming in school and all the teachers sitting next to the radios and holding the flags that were hanging in the room on their laps. They didn't tell us what happened, just that something bad had happened and many innocent people got killed. They will always have a place in our hearts. Thanks for reading.

Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.
