Poem Commentary

Do you know that perfect couple - the ones that were meant to be together, the perfect parents who do it all and agree on everything? I have some very close friends that are just like that, so imagine my surprise when I heard that they are divorcing!? The reason - the kids are growing up and we are growing apart. So I wrote this, for them and for so many more just like them.

Don’t Live Without Love

Remember when we lived in a simpler state of being

When the windows weren’t cracked, the door fit the hinges and there were no leaks in the ceiling

Somewhere we crossed over from love to living

The reality of our euphoric feeling dissipated as if surreal somehow

This is the here and now and our sanity is frayed a bit

We pass time to survive the commonalities of stress

Why is it that our mirrors now exist on opposite sides

We seldom look and reflect upon each other to see ourselves

Too much effort has been afforded to forgetting what it was that brought our spirits to the same light

Before we ever had one fight, we made a conscious decision to share identical fates

It takes effort to be a survivor of situation and circumstance

Withstanding the tides of the coupled erosion that the years bring

As each day passes it takes us farther away from the feeling of our first emotions

Our relationship reconstructs as time continuously attacks our foundation

We haven’t lost it all; we but have to recall all that made us who we are together

We can rediscover that love that existed before we began just living day to day

Remember when we lived in a simpler state of being

When the windows weren’t cracked, the door fit the hinges and there were no leaks in the ceiling

In this fast forward world we all inhabit, we have to shift gears occasionally, slowdown and revisit those things essential for nurturing each other and a relationship...Very on point and astute write! ~10~

In this world that revolves so fast, it is easy to say STOP I want to get off, but too many find that when they step aside that the world is even harder to face alone..... Thank you as always my friend for your words that brighten my written world.

The love of a couple, whether young or old, is a conscious decision to love, to have a clear vision of where you will navigate a relationship to. Sometimes, the irony of the fix-it problems in the early stage of love, is actually what may be reminisced as 'those days of wine and roses'. The later 'perfections', and perceived ease, may actually be a stubling block to distract from the essence of purpose in being together. A very wise person said 'return to your first love' : all enduring realtionships could be sustained in pursuing that high ideal. I love your treatment of this extremely crucial issue of remaining faithful for life: no punches pulled, every word and line plays its part in this relevant theme! Thanks for sharing and 'shaking the tree'!

Yes, the tree that was so firmly planted together b two sometimes has trouble sustaining life when one or the other of its caretakers departs... perhaps one watered while the other picked up the fallen leaves and nurtured with kind words... then when the unity is broken so is the spirit of the tree - I know that not all relationships are meant to stay together, that sometimes parting is best for all - there's just not fixing all that is wrong. It's the couples that give up too easily that sets the world a tilt... for when destiny loses out to cheated fate the balance of life never quite recovers! Thank you for your words - the value is immense!!!

Well, written and meets many requirement of a good poem. The rhythmn is perfect and you paint an excellent picture in the mind of the reader. good use of the metaphor in the line that reads :"our spirits to the same light" And ,yes the times do change as do people. a 10

You made my day, thank you for your more than kind words.

To have great poets there must be great audiences too.
