Drowning in a Sea of Me

Poem Commentary

My 16 year old daughter is going through a lot of day to day emotional swings of examining herself while weighing ways of finding motivation against the pull of giving up and giving in.

Drowning in a Sea of Me

Drowning in a sea of me

Anchored and pulled down by self-pity

Excuses form a shallow reef of protection

I can do nothing; eventually tiring to the point that I give up and go under

I can choose to exert effort; knowing that all positive motion moves me past negative emotions

Circumstances can be controlling

Still I have the ability to rise above the abyss

When I've found my shore upon solid ground, then I can be confident in the solitude that I will not drown

It's either sink or swim

The ebb and flow of the tide resides in my day to day mentality

Give me a river I'll cross it; Give me a sea I'll swim it; Give me an ocean and I'll conquer it

I like your wit, and you nailed it... we need to have control over ourselves... it's all there is... controlling Our Reactions to all that happens... find our Solid Ground and be confident... find something to do... thinking of how Mother Teresa didn't paint Picassos, but she quietly tended the sick and fed the hungry, like a major homeless shelter... your daughter might find a lot of value in a community help program... save the beaches, clean the parks, trash pick up day, drama classes on Thursday at school, political anything, eco something fun and creative and not expensive... maybe even, just be encouraged to write poetry... the young have the energy... they need a bit of a stir though... with pointer directions to activities that are like the 'calling card' Tom Sawyer used for white-washing the fences that really did turn out as fun and worthy...

Great Poem! It is when we give up the struggle and surrender that we find peace and clarity.

Amen Soulwriter...........this is what poetry is when a poet forever takes the high road......an example we all should respect. awesome.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
