Dust

I’ll buy you ice cream, then I’ll scream

That I’ve seen in my dream you and I try teaming up

And it was a pairing made from a must.

As we fought, you ran like you wanted to be caught,

Thought I’d never find another, but the love that you taught

Saved me from ruin and a life of lust.

So thank you, you built me from dust.

The rhyme scheme in this is outstanding... this is such a refreshing, original write. You leave it open for the reader to decide if the relationship continues or if you've just grown enough to acknowledge that you are indebted to this person for the guidance that was given during a particular time in your life... nicely done, again :)

Again, you are spot on MN. This is a simple, happy poem about a happy time in my life where things were returning to a much-missed, simpler 'normal' following a traumatic relationship breakdown through the love of someone new slowly disapparating the fears I had started to grow over whether I was good enough after being left for another man. I was grateful to her as I feared I would turn to one-night stands, or "a life of lust", as a way of feeling wanted again. Simple, but glad you liked it :)

Is this an allusion to something? I seems familiar, but I can't place it.

Nope, could be the use of 'ice cream' and 'I scream' that reminds you of something. Famous children's song has a similar line, but the likeness is entirely coincidental. I was just playing with fast-paced rhyme.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
