Poem Commentary

We all have compensations, Eleanor's was just a bit more interesting than most.

Eleanor Hotchkiss

Eleanor Hotchkiss had a cat

She loved her cat, and that was that

She let him grow very fat

Because Eleanor adored her cat

Eleanor Hotchkiss stood quite tall

Rare a suitor who’d come to call

But she and her cat still had a ball

Because Eleanor gave her cat her all

For work she clerked the county books

Tracked delinquents and petty crooks

Occasionally got dirty looks

From those recorded in those books

One winter eve in the cold and dark

She hurried home next to the park

When a threat’ning man, tall and stark

Stalked his victim in the dark

As she ducked inside to doff her cape

The scoundrel followed intent on rape

When twenty pounds landed on his nape

Dug deep his claws and began to scrape

The cat first scatched the big thug’s face

Tore half an ear, let the rest in place

Made the man squeal out in disgrace

As he fled the scene leaving blood to trace

Eleanor Hotchkiss would have liked romance

But like some who never had the chance

She found solace in her protector’s glance

Knowing all the while he could never dance

For Eleanor Hotchkiss had a cat

She loved her cat, and that was that

She helped him add more to his fat

Once she knew she owned a killer cat.

This was absolutely great. Loved it. Being a big fan of both Dr. Seuss and Edwin Arlington Robinson, I know they both would love this poem. Thank you Harver for sharing....Kevin.

This was an absolute pleasure to read, Harv!! I'm a cat lover, so I could relate... although I've had my fair share of dances with men much taller than me ;) Thanks for sharing this very enjoyable read, my friend!

you REALLY got into this, didn't you? I wuz speaking about killer pussy, and you got off on the very tall, maybe sinister types of guys. LOL Harv

Very enjoyable reading, my friend; a guard cat, smile. My Grandmother had a cat that could take any dog down on any given day.

That's probably because the cat was fighting for its life, the dog was just fighting off boredom. But then I know some cats are to be reckoned with. I've just seen dogs run down and kill some pretty big cats. Harv

Puss! Dat puss! What a puss, eh? Most cat owners do not understand the psychology of how a cat's brain or mind or instinct works . Cats believe that they own cat-owners, instead of cat -owners owning cats. Cats are very possessive, sly and self-opinionated...LOL. I am impressed with the masterly and succinct style in which you composed this bit of narrative poetry, rather than the story per se. . You have imparted a classical flavor to the poem by by your mastery of the quatrain, onomatopoeic rhymes, and appropriate dynamics ,such as effective word play, rhythm and tempo. My rating for audience attraction and overall good features is 10x1`0.

Yeah, there was the unspoken double entendre of pussy forcing. Wouldn't have mentioned it, except you did first. LOL

An absolute delight!! An amusing story wrapped in a bouncy telling that makes this a gem of a poem. Eleanor soundslike one of my neighbors in Onion Creek.

How's HER cat? Harv

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
