Final Atonement

Poem Commentary

Have you ever married someone and then asked yourself after it was over, "What the hell was I thinking?!".  Well, I did and realized too late the mistakes I had made. The only good thing that came from it was my daughter, and I am lucky to have her with me every day and not have to deal with the hellspawn that birthed her anymore.

Final Atonement

"'Til death do you part'' must have seemed such a joke,
because now I know all of the vows that you broke.
Standing before God in your white, frilly dress,
with all intentions of making our lives a mess.
Always you were innocent, forever dwelling on the past,
while constantly deciding on the next lie to cast.
Then came time to be a mother, secretly dreading each day
at the thoughts of being burdened and unable to stray.
Your secrets were well hidden in the pit you call a soul,
and the evil trapped inside you made us all look the fool.
Unwittingly, I was blinded by the love behind your eyes,
but in reality never knew of the lust between your thighs.
Your avarice grew like a cancer and spread into my heart,
and when the time was right you helped it split our home apart.
You feel you have done nothing, that I am the one to blame,
but I hope that in time you feel the awful twinge of shame.
You lied to yourself, you lied to me, you lied to God above,
and lied and hurt our child, giving her pain and not love.
Still, knowing you, you'll never see the pain you've wrought
by only wanting for yourself and never giving a thought
to how life could have been for you, a family dear and true.
Someday you will regret you sins, and give the Lord his due.

Raz - One can only hope that she gets what's coming to her. Once a cheat - always a cheat or so the saying goes. But when the hammer falls .. will she heed it's call ... only God will really know. ... What comes around goes around .. Karma's a bitch that way! :) Ken

I think we have all met someone we thought was wonderful, but later turned out to the bearer of great pain and heartache. That which does not break us, can only make us stronger :)... You sound like you are happy now and I wish you the very best. A moving and emotive write, I like the viviacity and bite in the wordings. Bravo! Narrator.

the way you execute the pain and the intensity of this poem with many original lines like this...Unwittingly, I was blinded by the love behind your eyes, but in reality never knew of the lust between your thighs....is great,,,I;m touch and quiet teary while reading this one..

Very beautiful. I like that you state, and do not judge. The facts are very true. I like this a lot. It makes me think of my father's worrysome ex-wife. She would get nervous about anything and then go and do it herself. xD

i did enough judging after the marriage was over, this was the part where i left it to the world to do their own judging. thx, Alyson

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
