For Jeanne

Poem Commentary

I had a close friend, named Jeanne, who contracted a rare form of cancer a year ago in July. She was a complete nature nut, so when Spring rolled around and she was unable to get outside and enjoy the season, I wrote her this poem. She died a few months ago and a group of us had the privelege of scattering her ashes into Lake Superior, one of her favorite places on earth.

For Jeanne

In the quiet sun spackled canopy of the forest
Grow sage colored lichens
With their lacy edges ruffling slightly in the wind
Glistening with morning dew
They listen as the forest begins breathing new life once again.
The gnarled trees are flexing
Their sinewy roots and quaking limbs
As the buds patiently await
Their cue to begin the opening act
Of the ancient rites and rituals called Spring.
Fresh rotting leaves and discarded bark
Rich decay of spongey warm loam
Disregarded as useless and unlovely
Yet providing the necessary nutirents
From seasons passed
For the seeds of dried and crackling pods
As they ferret into the moist earth with quiet determination
To find shelter in a summer home.

A really nice piece Lucinda! You captured the essence of the season perfectly! You convey the rebirth of life in such a beatiful way. The imagery and flow are both awesome. Great Job! ..... Ken

Oh ... I forgot to mention ... the underlying theme. I know it is about Jeanne - but you portrayed the season so well It was the first thing that came to mind. It is also of course a beautiful tribute.

The first thing that hits me about this poem is the diction. You have selected so many "just right" words. Then, the phrasing: you have put those words together in memorable, esthetic lines. // The note about the cancer is an essential part of this poem; never leave it out. It sets the tone, and invests so much meaning in those lines. // You moved me. It also scares me, because i see my own fate coming for me. I hope that someone will write so lovely a memorial poem for me. // I wasn't really expecting a poem this good. You never even mention the cancer in the poem, or even your friend's death! Yet these lines speak so strongly of life and death and their intertwining in the world. // God bless you for loving your friend so dearly. You have cut my heart in half. --PWC (M.L.P.) aka Mr. Poet

I too have a friend named Jeanne, who is taking treatments. She is a victim of breast cancer. Your poem is very touching and reminds me of her. Thank you!
