THE MUSIC OF THE SPHERES

THE MUSIC OF THE SPHERES

The Pythagoreans used music to heal the body and to elevate the soul, yet they believed that earthly music was no more than a faint echo of the universal 'harmony of the spheres'. In ancient cosmology, the planetary spheres ascended from Earth to Heaven like the rungs of a ladder. Each sphere was said to correspond to a different note of a grand musical scale. The particular tones emitted by the planets depended upon the ratios of their respective orbits, just as the tone of a lyre-string depended upon its length. Another type of celestial scale related the planetary tones to their apparent rates of rotation around the Earth. The music of the spheres was never a fixed system of correspondences. Many variant schemes existed because each philosopher would necessarily approach it from a slightly different perspective. The musicologist Joscelyn Godwin comments, "...the celestial harmony of the solar system... is of a scope and harmonic complexity that no single approach can exhaust. The nearest one can come to understanding it as a whole is to consider some great musical work and think of the variety of analytical approaches that could be made to it, none of them embracing anything like the whole

WHAT DO YOU THINK??

Re: THE MUSIC OF THE SPHERES

I don't know of music, but I know of theories that introduce the concept of resonance or 'tones', but have not stated them as being notes

I had stew peas ! But the stew wasn't crunchy, and my head was firmly screwed on....

Thanks for introducing me to Marsink's poetry. I haven't even started to read you yet, and you wish to get rid of me .......................lol

I plan to esplain , at another time the hypothetical relation between poetry and the musical spheres. Not that many will want to read it, except you, Woredlinger, Masink, Irfish and Stardrift, probably.

I SHALL READ MARSINK. THANKS.

Lmao, Cuz, you hit my favorite nerve, this subject tickles me.

here is my write on that, and I have one more cooking up.
that u will love..

TONAL PAINT

What is this I find?

A box of twelve jars

Colors like gems inside

Astromic

What will I do with them?

With my eyes

Finger paint, sounds logic

1. Violet Red is unknown in the dark

Jupiter reaches with a pearl,

plucks the Gemini bard

Sparks phases the stable F# sharp

2. Deep Red moves the curtains to see

Saturn reaches with garnet

plucks the Capricorn bard

Gaze at the steady G

3. Red desires where the action is at

Apollo reaches with a ruby

plucks the Cancer bard

Glimpse the firm A flat

4. Red Orange also wants to play

Mercury reaches with a amethyst

plucks the Aquarius bard

Optic is the sound of A

5. Orange is more short and flat

Jupiter reaches with an onyx

plucks the Leo bard

A spec of balanced B flat

6. Yellow is a bright fellow you see

Saturn reaches with a bloodstone

plucks the Pisces bard

Apparent is the vital B

7. Yellow Green is a dreamer with speed

Apollo reaches with a sapphire

plucks the Virgo bard

An image of the fast C

8. Green is convincing with his harp

Mercury reaches with a diamond

plucks the Aries bard

Leering is the confirmed C# sharp

9. Green Blue like you who whistles melody

Jupiter reaches with a opal

plucks the Libra bard

Viewing is the sound of D

10. Blue plays a big part

Saturn reaches with a emerald

plucks the Taurus bard

Visualizing is the immovable D# sharp

11. Blue Violet favorite of everybody

Apollo reaches with a topaz

plucks the Scorpio bard

Complete is the constant E

12. Violet sits back with clefs

Mercury reaches with a turquoise

plucks the Sagittarius bard

Squinting is the riveted F

A notation, my notion

A slick little thought

Sounds are heard, but they desire to see

We face the music

Teach to be taught like you and me

I think I’ll take this box and painting into town

I’ll call it, the personification descending sight to sound

oh oh

Glad your stew wasn't crunchy, couisin...but then you might have been stewed to the gills, and hadn't noticed the sand pebbles mixed in with the peas. And mercy no, I would not be trying to push you out the door...you deserve much better than that.
And look at this work of Word...he is a master of the poets-of-thought. I can paint and write, but I have one ear that is tone-deaf, and the other one can't tell a #B from a dull knife. So, I will have to study your hypothesis on music and orbs.............

Re: THE MUSIC OF THE SPHERES

It is a well accepted concept in astro physics that space bodies create sound. Think of the sound made by a passing car or train. As it approaches the sound gets louder, once it passes the sound changes frequency and diminishes in volume. Einstein wrote about thuis in one of his theories. What is music other than sound and frequency. Imagine the infinity of objects in space, an indefinate number of sounds and frequencies, notes, musical notes. All you need to do is listen.

Re: THE MUSIC OF THE SPHERES

I find the notion a wonderful child of Science and Romanticism. I have no philosophic or metaphysic ideas to offer, but I do have a poem entitles "Music of the Spheres", a hymn to the beauty and elegnce of the Cosmos and Creation.

WHAT???? A poem entitled "MUSIC OF THE SPHERES" ! I must read it immediately.

Read ,Bret, my poem, JUST TO BE POOR AGAIN, and comment. Thanks.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.
