Clara Who!!!????

Edmund Clerihew Bentley (1875-1956) is remembered mainly for his classic detective story Trent's Last Case and for the humorous verse form that was named after him - the clerihew. It was at the age of sixteen, while he was at St. Paul's School in London, that Bentley first started writing clerihews, as a diversion from school work. G. K. Chesterton, Bentley's life-long friend, was at St. Paul's at the same time, and he too wrote clerihews.

What is a clerihew? Very simple..

* It is biographical and usually whimsical, showing the subject from an unusual point of view; it pokes fun at mostly famous people
* It has four lines of irregular length (for comic effect); the third and fourth lines are usually longer than the first two
* The rhyme structure is AABB; the subject matter and wording are often humorously contrived in order to achieve a rhyme
* The first line consists solely (or almost solely) of the subject's name.

Now that you know all you need to know about clerihews, write me some! They can be of famous people, present or past, movie stars, athletes or anyone you feel the readers would be able to identify.

Here's one of mine...

Poor Henry Morton Stanley
Will not be remembered as manly.
His fame, as you may have assumed,
Is only for what he presumed.

Oh, that poor Angelina Jolie,
Though of course, she is so lovely,
Even with her luscious lips
She's not as pretty as Brad Pitt.

The truth be told is that Miss Marilyn Monroe
Went to her grave quite famous, don’t you know,
But what was not revealed, her best kept secrets.
in her shoes her sexy feet had many toes, strangely six.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
