Halfway Measures

If I just pray enough, then I’ll see an axis shift

Not as though I’d earned it, but more, some gracious gift

Dismay clouds the daily venue and vertigo the mind

And yet, re-sorting integers, mayhap some joy, I’ll find.

Life doesn’t order sequals, each drama stands alone

So if stuck in some brief comedy, let laughter, sin atone

Or falling short of syndication, give reruns time to air

For the actors, and producers, nothing less would count as fair

Today I prayed, and lightly laid that healing drop of oil

Recompense the faith, and make amends, for years of futile toil

No one ever gets so old, that hope is no more needed

That’s the rationale I took, for the argument I pleaded.

Wrestling with the shadows, the shaken nest of doubt

The vultures snaked their naked heads, o’er shoulders dark and stout

Pinions rattle tales of bones, of vanquished human hope

While light attacks tenebris, now caught within its scope.

This time no phyrric victory, amounting to defeat

No bugal voice, no pounding feet, signalling retreat

Just a gentle quiet, against the gloom of solitary

Makes the creeping terror of old age, seem a bit less scary.

The psalmist sang the sacred touch, of the watchful Shepherd’s hand

With looks, and crooks, the simple such approached the Promised Land

The hard eyes of our Nemesis, turned hungry at our feast

Though not delivered from Death’s Vale, we’re halfway through, at least.

This man seems as though he is walking through his life. Of all his knowledge that he has gained as well as his mistakes. None becomes too old that one can not repent for his toil. I do so enjoy this part, I always say to my patients that it is never to late to find forgiveness in the Lord. Fantastic write Harver. No idea where you create such memorable work in your mind. Wish I could tap into it. lol Hugz

Two ideational lovers from different sides of town (my brain) meet on the neural bridge called the corpus collosum and kiss. Later, one of them gives birth to a new idea. I think there is a whole lot of that activity going on. Harv

Prayer might not sift the axis but this poem did. You deep thinking is always right on with humankinds's hungry feast. How picky can some be...I'm the world's worst speller and editor. Please just digest contents only. Hey there friend. Keep poeting

Life can be hard to make it to the end....we survive the best we can, and hope that the hump is easy going after it is scaled. Your poem is of a Poe-ish flare, Harv...........There is a greatness within...............................................gogant

An intriguing and interesting read, well written and a joy to read. Absolutely loved the last stanza. 10

Hopefully, an intentional allusion to Psalm 23 fits here. Thanks, Harv

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
