HELLO MR. SCRATCH

Poem Commentary

Just to find a way out of poverty, so many of our young people are tempted to the darker side of life. prostitution, drug selling, adopting a life of vice and crime.  It is easy to sit back and say that's just wrong but for those that face poverty and social injustice on a daily basis, the choice is not always so simple. It's a cinch to say get lost when the larder is full, the neighborhood is upscale and you don't have to duck the stray bullet.
Yet when you see the hungry faces of your family, live without the basics, face the cutoff of your utilities  the choice becomes tougher.

My parents taught me the only choice was the right choice achieved by hard work and perserverance. They weren't always realistic about life. That choice isn't always as easy for everyone as they made it sound. This is my tribute to the kids who do have the courage to turn away from wrong, when the wrong choice could mean survival.

HELLO MR. SCRATCH

Hello Mr. Scratch

Hello Mr Scratch what's that you say
Do I need extra cash? Then just walk your way
I know I'm poor, yeah I live in a slum.
But I'm not that desperate and I'm really not dumb

What's that Mr. Scratch, can you tempt me tonight?
Oh your offer is good, I'm just not gonna bite
That car is real cool and those Jordan's are sweet
But I'll stick with the one who takes care of my feet.

Where will you be when I sell off my soul?
Waiting for me in your dark fiery hole?
Well as tempting as you suppose that might be
I can tell you right off that you're just not for me.

Now Scratch get behind me, get out, close the door
and make sure you don't come back anymore
I've got a great contract titled John 3:16
So don't recruit me, you're on the wrong team.

great advice to those who would heed it, and really well written. I like this, I'm with you... "Get thee behind me..." right?

Indeed, but since the recession Mr. Scratch hasn't made me any offers. Guess he knows I won't accept but I bet he thinks he has a cartload of opportunities out there. Get thee behind me is right.

This poem tells me that the author is someone special and she definitely gives out good advice. Yes, definitely your parents gave you right direction and thank the Lord you made it and are here with the wisdom to help others through their journey especially the young and vulnerable because of circumstances.

A beautifully written work you've written. A very nice tribute to youth of today whom turn away from the wrong choices.

Thank you StandingBear.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
