    Poem Commentary

another old poem...there are just too many....

    Heroes and Cowards

I don't believe in heroes or cowards
    drunkards and scholars
    are but one drink apart
thinking so deeply you find the bottom
    and find yourself buried
    forgotten but never gone
loved and lauded in your own time
    basement cellar
    for all your posthumous writings
    children grown who never knew
the magic soul of the man called
    father
    grandfather
    old pictures with tattered edges
grinning with love and a sparkle
    in eyes long dead
    I don't believe you were a hero
    or a coward
but I read the words from your own pen
and I wish someday I will know when
I can believe in you again

Wonderful work! I hear the wisdom in these words, and feel the heartache of fruitless wishing. Nothing sadder then... what might have been. "10"

You have a way of writing straight from the heart that is refreshing. No one becomes a hero until they are dead. If you are alive your dirt is fair game to dig up. It amazes me how when someone is alive they are judged for all the bad they do, and when they've passed they are judged for all the good they did while we were pointing out the bad. Somewhere between the two points lies the truth. I think you got that.

Very intense.... This particular poem has a very strong message, and I really enjoyed reading it. As much as I write poetry, I'm not a big fan of reading poetry much, but I enjoyed this one for sure!

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.
