Poem Commentary

Ever looked around for something more to eat when you have plenty
i was started to graze and complaining to myself when the memory of my parents reaction to all I had  when I use to do this hit me hard. My parents were generous and loving and the thought of their reaction to my greed put me to shame.

I AM HUNGRY WHAT CAN I HAVE?

I am Hungry what can I have?

What can I have There’s nothing good to eat?

What can I have I’m looking for a treat?

There are brownies on the counter

Fresh fruit is in the bowl

Cut fruit is in the fridge

Yet I feel like a lost soul.

The freezer’s full of choices

Ribs , steak and chicken too

The cupboards full of Pasta

Oh what am I to do?

My mom would yell, “You ingrate.”

“You have more than enough to eat.

Think of those who are starving

Who can’t stand on their feet.”

I guess she made a good point

But it doesn’t help a bit

I’m looking for something special

Until I find it, I won't quit.

She’d say, “Stop searching for your dog’s load

When you can always go get more

Get up and feed the starving

Who can’t go to the store”.

I guess I’m not really hungry

The memory of her words causes shame

I’ll start cooking that food for the hungry

For the helpless, the sick and the lame.

Not everyone has a full larder

Some live in the park night and day

Some carry their lives in a suitcase

And just for a good meal they pray

God forgive me for being so greedy

For thinking I didn’t have enough

I pray that you bless all those in need

For them the goings still rough.

"Some carry their lives in a suitcase And just for a good meal they pray" One of the most poetically touching lines I have read in a long time.

This is a very special piece..I enjoyed this one from line 1 also. I can relate to this cuz it seems no matter how much u give ur family gives its never enough..until u think of all of the starving ppl in this world who fighting to get a meal, education all the thing we take for granted.

This is a wonderful poem! It sheds light on many of us. Sometimes people that we know all our lives practically, can be hungry...but to embarrassed to let anyone know. That is why we need to be sensitive to the Spirit, and pray, so that God will show us who is in need right with in arms reach...as well as far away. Loved it cmlestrade!

I was very hungry once and sitting in the company lunchroom pretending I would rather read. My two friends Lizet and Rayann did not buy that nonsense for one minute. It was embarrasing when they began heaping my plate with their food but I cried later when I realized the joy of having such good friends.

I do it a lot. I have to catch myself and realize how greedy I am. Two of my online friends called it when they said it's not always about the food. I have been thinking about that.

Poetry is what gets lost in translation.
