I AM YOUR SISTER

Poem Commentary

I wrote this for Black History month for reconigtion of all the powerful sisters out there that made a difference, to my grandmother, mother, myself and someday for my daughter.

I AM YOUR SISTER

I am your sister, we are bound by the blood
spilled from our brother, sacrificed by our father
born into sin, the color of skin
I am your sister
Look at me, what use to be
you're not feeling me
The me, I am today, living for tomorrow, survivor of yesterdays
I traveled so far, still far to go
I am your sister
Why should I sympathize, when you criticize
and don't recognize
what I expect from man
Men, stand up for me
I am your sister
I need empathy
I have needs
to be hugged, to be touched, to be loved
to be understood, for my anger
I struggled too, same as you
I am your sister
Seeking strength in the word, giving praise to his name
Salvation the game
Loving thy neighbor, forgiver of wrong, follower of the righteous
My faith remains strong
I am your sister
finding my way
through the madness around me, the devil below me
the haters in front of me, the enemy beside me
wasted years are behind me
My God is for me, for us
I am your sister
for better for worst, through sickness and in health
and thick and through thin
From the beginning of time, until our time comes to end
I am your sister
I've always been there
When Adam took the first bite, when Mary gave life
from the ride on the boat, the rope round your throat
the shackles on your feet
From the freedom train, to let freedom ring
From segregation to integration
When Sojourner spoke truth, when Harriett broke through
When Jane Pittman was thirsty and Rosa Parks was tired
I was your sister
I am Jospehine Baker
Maya Angelou
Nikki Giovianni
Angela Davis
Gwendolyn Brooks
Mae Jemison
Phillis Wheatley
Bessie Coleman
Coretta Scott King
Carol Moseley Braun
Marian Anderson
Shirley Chisholm
Toni Morrison
Wilma Rudolph
And many more to rise and fall
We are your sisters
one for all
I am your sister
I earned nagging rights and deserved to heard
I won't be ashamed or make excuses for who I am
I will demand my respect and fight for my honor
I am always going to expect more and except nothing less
because I am your sister
and I won't let you forget
I won't have any regrets
for the hand I was dealt
I learned to deal
I am your sister
Embrace me and I will lift you up
Fight with me and we will conquer
Love me and I will worship you
I am your mother
I am your wife
I am your friend
I am your sister, your sister in Christ
Your sister for life

Thank you and keep reading... It's sad that misery and depression makes a good write but fortunate for me God is the director in my life and brings me through...

My thought on this poem.I was charged with the beggining by letting me know, about the title. My eye was caught thru the middle by asking the question who personally is this about, then the secret was unwrapped like a present from an adult or kid very slowly. You gave me insight with original words of wisdom and guidance from the heart that let others know from a poem that we have love thru christ from others including yourself. One thing I would like to add if you could please just more metaphors other wise this was an outstanding poem. I appreciate your insight on other poets as well very talented people as well as yourself.

When you say use more metaphors, do you mean in general from reading my work or just in this particular poem. Realism is important to me. I want the reader to know exactly where I am coming from and what I am experiencing/feeling. I will have to definitely work on that because I like the use of metaphors when I read someone else work. Thanks for the feedback.

To have great poets there must be great audiences too.
