I Have Seen

Poem Commentary

My father, who is over 80 years old, suffers from macular degeneration, a progressive eye disease where the end result is blindness. He has already lost vision in one eye, and we received a bad report this week on the other eye. I wrote this poem for him as a gesture of love and sadness for him, but also as a reminder of all the wonderful things he has been blessed to see over the years. If you have a spare moment, please say a prayer for his eyes.

I Have Seen

I Have Seen

As I look back on my life

I never must forget

For more than thirty thousand days

I have seen the blazing sunset.

What a miracle, I thought

As I hummed a little tune

Because for just as many nights

I have gazed up at the moon.

I’ve witnessed brilliant streaks of lightning

Watched a million flowers bloom

I’ve seen the faces of my loved ones

And how their smiles light up a room.

I’ve been awed by mountains’ majesty

Watched the roll of ocean waves

Walked in a wonderland of snowflakes

Seen tears flow by many graves.

I’ve watched my children’s children grow

Then start families of their own

I’ve seen the fruits of my hard labor

Emerge from seeds that I have sown.

I’ve seen birds soar across blue skies

Marveled creatures of the sea

So much beauty in this world

That God has shared with me.

For my Daddy

A beautifully written work you've created honoring the wonderful love you have of your dad. Great write.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
