once you were so sweet and small
I could measure you in inches
your head fit in my hand
and you used to love my kisses

16 now and near full grown
and not nearly so sweet
I know you think you know it all
but some things you cannot cheat

they say a man will not attain
full height till twenty-five
so though you're over six feet now
you've an inch yet to arrive

I feel your full resentment
of my lessons and my rules
if you'd only listen then you'd know
I'm trying to give you tools

but stubborn and so headstrong
you truly are my son
and deep inside determined
to not credit anyone

I see the path before you
and directions I try to send
you're forging forward blinded
straight for that dead end

but you don't like my warning
so you must persist
with attitude foul-mouthed and rude
and points made with your fists

I've closed the door and locked it
my words you will not hear
I've beat my head against your wall
and reasoned with my fears

you're only sixteen and I know
you think you know it all
but sadly son you're gonna learn
what it means to take a fall

So I will stand here waiting
while you do it all your way
I know that you'll be back to seek
what wisdom I can convey

I know you're nearly full a man
please remember though
before you reach maturity
you've another inch to grow

All the concerns and cares of a parent are wrapped into these words. From another mother, they never grow up. I have a fifty year old - on down to forty-two and now grand kids to worry about.

The love of a parent will always be needed, even when children reach the point they don't think they need anyone or anything. 10

It will be surprising to see how much wiser you will appear to him in the next five years. As the child gets older and leaves the home the parent gets wiser without doing anything at all. The rebel stage is always a warm up for crisis. I'm sure glad mine are all grown up.

The great wisdom of a parent is what always stands strong thru times of parenting. you have a great way of distigushing life thru your words so perfectly I love to read, and keep on reading. I understand the frustrations of being a parent but yet your son is even taller than mine wow what a challenge.

Beautiful hun, just beautiful. One thing us as parents find it difficult to do, is show tough love. My girls are still babies, but I've experienced alot with my mother with dealing with my youngest brother. You can't baby them forever, you have to let them do it the way THEY see best and let them fall when they do, and often times, get up on their own.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
