    Poem Commentary

JAZZ IS A UNIQUE ART FORM THAT IS AN EXPRESSION OF THE SOUL JUST LIKE POETRY.

    JAZZ MAN

    HIS LONG LITHE FINGERS
    GRIPPED THE SAX
    AND MAGIC BEGAN.

    I WAS BORED THAT NIGHT
NO DATE AND IT WAS LATE
BUT SOMETHING PLEADED WITH MY SOUL
TO HANG OUT AND HAVE A DRINK.

USALLY A LADY OF MY TASTE
    NEVER EVER WOULD WASTER
HER OWN GREEN ON A GLASS
    OF WINE OF DISTASTE
BUT I OPTED TO GO AND THERE I WAS.

    PURPLE, FLOWERED, GREEN AND RED
SUITS AND DRESSES OVERWHELMED MY HEAD.
THE CLUB WAS SMALL AND DANK
WITH HALOS OF SMOKE IN THE AIR

    BUT ACCORDING TO A FRIEND
YOU JUST HAD TO BE THERE
    AT LEAST ONCE.

    THE JAZZ MAN PLAYED
    AND HIS HEART WAS HOT
    HIS FINGERS WERE NIMBLE
AND HIS LIPS WERE TIGHT.  HE PLAYED A TUNE
THAT RIPPLED AND CREATED A MOOD
I WAS CAPTIVATED BY HIS ABSTRACT TUNES.

THAT NIGHT HE PLAYED FOR ME/CLOSED EYES, HEART IN HIS HORN
WAS THE FIRST TIME I FELT FREE. PLAY JAZZ MAN, PLAY GIVE YOUR MUSIC TO THE FORLORN.  I LOOKED AT HIS SHOES, WORN AND TATTERED BUT NOTHING TO THE JAZZ MAN MATTERED.  HE WAS IN HIS ELEMENT, PLAYING WHAT HE FELT.  HE PLAYED THE PEOPLE'S BLUES SO FOR A WHILE THEY WOULD MELT.  JAZZ MAN, JAZZ MAN, CAN YOU PLAY ONE FOR ME?  I JUST AIN'T GOT ENOUGH OF THOSE SAXOPHONE BLUES.

another really nice work Carolyn. SO smooth, I love it, and Oh Jazz it is so smooth to the Jazz-man!

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.
