If I were a German soldier,

Would I have herded people to a sudden death.

Let cyanide fumes be their gasping, final breath?

Would I have stopped Jews from being cruelly killed,

or look away ordering a martini slightly chilled?

Would I have died rather than snuff an innocent,

Suffering a death under the Third Reich torment?

Would I have taken the bullet meant for JFK?

11-22 would not have been his, but my final day.

If it were possible to stop the Dallas coup d’état,

Would this have changed the ending to the war in Vietnam?

Could I have spoken for a baby in her mother’s womb,

or have taken a drag in my upstairs living room?

Will I be accountable at the end, we’ll someday see.

Shrugging my shoulders, at least it isn’t me.

Would I run away or stand and fight?

Would it make a difference if it meant a precious life?

Very interesting thoughts you have penned here ... "If" is a small word that could make a world of difference. "If" only ..... Very nice write Pal! Great job! Ken

Oblaidon, A poem that simply matters. The questioning of humanity is noble. If only things could (and could have been) different. ginga

In a different ways each day, each of us can ask these same questions..."if you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything" Very thought provoking and powerful write!

Thank you very much.

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
