    LOVE MAKES PARENTS

    Dec. 1989
    When I was but seventeen,
    people came into my life.
Right away, they were parents to me,
For I became their own son's wife.
Now, they didn't have to love me,
Or Accept me as their own,
But their hearts were opened to me,
And I was welcome in their home.
The first time Dad called me, "Sissy",
    It really made me glad.
I knew that from that time on,
To me, he would be Dad.
Mom showed me that she loved me,
    In her own special way.
She taught me many practical things,
To help me through the day.
    Now lots of people have good parents;
Mine are the best you ever saw.
But who can say the very same thing,
    About their Mother and Father-in-law?

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
