Mirrored Lives

Mirrored Lives

I look into the mirror
And stare at an unfamiliar face.
A frame that does not reflect
A visage gathered or garnered
In this lifetime.

He looks back, piercing past my eyes
With a knowing iconic intensity
One gathered over many an eon
Of comradeship and certain kinship.

I balk at his extraordinary gull
Which implores reflection
On the ageless aspects
That Narcissus could not see,
On what is not, and yet is,
So corporally me.

Then a door bursts open,
A vacuum in space breaks.
All around, the walls fall.
Framed is a thousand exposures
Of lives lost on battlefields,
Over loves honor upheld,
To many a natural disaster,
and a host of personal struggles.

How clear it is now
The person I see
Is the one and same
I have called the Self.
He resonates through from

A myriad of lost civilizations,
And well beyond, to future times.
The permeations of my successive
Existence I now know, are lived
Entirely within this single moment.

It is here we are all united
Pushed past this fixed field point,
Flowing through the gates of illusion,
Known as self, space, and time.

A deep, soulful introspection yielding interesting results. This was thought provoking. The piece for me seemed to find its heart in the third stanza. Thanks

This was recently edited to reflect my growing perspective in its last stanza but all else was written in a short sitting some five years ago.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
