MONT HELENA

Poem Commentary

This poem is about the ghost of 'Helen' of Mont Helena, in Rolling Fork, Mississippi. The photo is of the actual plantation house located on top of an Indian Mound. We used to skip school and go out to Mont Helena when it was in a state of ruin, and we spent  numerous hours perusing it's rooms. The basement was actually built into the Indian Mound, and shackles and chains were still in evidence there. This was a working slave plantation, and is filled with haunted lore. Many people have been said to have died within it's walls. I know that alone, and after dark, it's probably the spookiest place I've ever been. .

MONT HELENA

I feel the chill bumps on neck arising
As I slowly climb the mound
Skipping school in search of hauntings...
'Tis one place I won't be found

I place one foot before the other
Dare I enter these haunted doors?
Dare I listen for the pitter patter
Of ghostly feet upon these floors?

I see before me stairwell, looming
Broken steps that draw me on...
As I climb them, fearfully praying
That Helen's Ghost this day is gone...

To my ear comes sound of rocker
With sopranoed voice in quiet song...
My feet no longer know their master
They climb gently, steadily, further on...

I hear the gentle wind a'brushing
Rotting lace against broken sill
I feel the groping hands of darkness
When sweat of fear is lost to chill

I hear my soul in concert singing
Matching melody with voice above...
In eeirie light of stairwell, crooning
Of long dead lover's eternal love.

Drawing constant, ever upward
I follow the chorus of sad refrain
Until I stand before empty rocker
And gaze out dirty window pane

I see the plain of sad plantation
As her voice fades in my ear...
Her whispered words she leaves in parting
"Tell my love I'll meet him here".

I loved this but didn't take it seriously. Children fear everything and nothing. Thank goodness we all grow up. Any ghosts left we can write about. You score big with this one.

Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.
