    Poem Commentary

    My memory of mornings at the Lakota Sundance in Little Eagle, SD. This is my dedication to those memories.

    Morning Prayer

     The daylight whispers in
    Over the stardust glean
    With hot ashes and a cool breeze.
    The rocky pines stand in line
    Like tall sentinels guards.
    Above a hawk hovers high
    Over the new fire's heat.
    The coffee grounds settle
    Within the kettle's black iron bottom
    As it nears a roiling boil.
     
    Far off a rattler's coil echos
    From out of the bright daybreak hills.
    Children cry out for fry bread
    With cinnamon and an apple slice or two.
    The day has begun as the Sundance drum
    Hums with a strong tribal song.

    Elders edge in, chairs in arm
    Along the circle's horn.
    The medicine man makes his way
    Inside, to have his say,
    Now that all have joined
    For the start of morning prayer

    Again I played the scenes in my head. Part of it reminded me of my visit to Colorado last month, before the snow. loved it
