My Own Affliction

My Own Affliction

I was told that it’s wrong to do but I went ahead and filled my heart with hate.

I don’t care what they say cuz that’s how I dealt with my ill fate.

I hope ya’ll can handle me now that you turned me into a pretender.

I hope I don’t meet the one to change me back, my single most apprehender.

No longer will I sit and wait to suffocate.

I’m going full speed ahead with intentions to infiltrate.

Well for a while time might stay suspended.

But I took my heart out so it doesn’t need to be defended.

I’m out and about with an old and selfish cause.

The decision was so easy that I didn’t hesitate or even pause.

I grew up big and they taught me to be strong.

And somewhere along the way I learned not to believe in a song.

I learned to rely only on what is real.

That takes away everything from my home to what I feel.

Even though I’m back on my personal highway to hell

I don’t think the idea of me going back to the bottle is gonna sell.

Life is one thing I truly don’t understand and I’m not even going to make and attempt.

It strikes me kinda funny that in God’s court I’m the first to find myself in contempt.

I don’t know up from down but I still know right from wrong but that doesn’t make my decisions resolute.

I’m chasing away my dreams and chasing down my demons with a shot of absolute.

That seems to go against what I said which makes it a contradiction.

So I have another human weakness, but it’s my own affliction.

Well for someone who learned not to believe in song along the way, your poetry is quite lyrical. Did you ever see the Hepburn /Fonda version of war and peace where someone states "We rise, we fall and we rise again. clayton somewhere in your life someone broke your heart and your poems were so bitter but as of late they have been filled with hope and triumph. I'm assuming this is from the old clayton and not the new powerful guy who's poetry is becoming more dynamic daily. As for the shot of absolute, maybe we all need a tipple now and then. That's a silly word the english use for alcoholic drinks. My daughter will come home and say let's have a tipple and I'll say sure. We're not drinkers but she'll create some ridiculous fruit juice concoction with paper unbrellas and straws. Everybody has a tipple for you it's absolute for me it's chocolate ice cream that should alert us that we're sinking into that danger zone. I think both the old and new poetry are dynamic.

Thank you for the comment, as always it is appreciated. As for your question of this being from the "old" me, yes it is. this piece is quite old. The absolute is something i have stepped away from since i have gotten control of my life, but i do know what you mean about everyone having a tipple, and I had a good laugh reading your comment. Thanks again.

this is kind of essay...the content is good but there's li'l musicality,,,

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.

John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) Thirty-fifth President of the USA
