Poem Commentary

The Nature of Things was inspired by: The Five Remembrances from the Budda: 1. I am of the nature to grow old. There is no way to escape growing old. 2. I am of the nature to have ill health. There is no way to escape ill health. 3. I am of the nature to die. There is no way to escape death. 4. All that is dear to me and everyone I love are of the nature of change. There is no way to escape being separated from them. 5. My actions are my only true belongings. I cannot escape the consequences of my actions. My actions are the ground upon which I stand.

Nature of Things

Poets talk of Destiny's Child.
Does such a thing exist?
Has God proclaimed what I must be
and all the things I'll miss?

Am I a pawn upon some board,
some game I do not see?
Or do I have a choice about
how things will happen to me?

Ill health can't be avoided.
Sickness is bound to come.
Perhaps if I'm real careful
I'll miss the fate of some.

All the things I hold so dear
even the ones I love
are all of the nature of change
and will fly off like a dove.

I can't escape growing old
it's built into my genes.
No matter what steps I take
my youthful look takes wings.

It's also written in the books
that I will someday die.
Even with the best of care
or whatever things I try.

So illness, loss and growing old
as well to eventually die
are of the basic nature of things
I can't change if I try.

But God gave me the gift of choice.
My actions are my own.
I can't escape the consequence
of seeds that I have sewn.

An excellent poem which captures the truness of life with no truer words being said, "But God gave me the gift of choice. My actions are my own. I can't escape the consequence of seeds that I have sewn.

the poem is wonderful . I agree we will grow old and die . But I think you can age gracefully . Live life to the fulliest and when you go you will know you had one heck of a life . Again the poem was great Marie

A perfect 10 Aggieprof! There is no escape from the wheel of Karma... No matter how hard we try. This is vaguely reminiscent of a poem I wrote last year. It talked about what we left behind... http://www.originalpoetry.com/death-does-not-equivocate

Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
