Neglect

Neglect

worn sepia rug, frayed and bare in patches

greasy stains and smudges

mar the faded yellow wallpaper

minimal furniture, not by design

simply for lack of consideration

soft white powder leaves its mark

on the small, cloudy square mirror

lying on the cheap, water-damaged coffee table

dollar bills, not used for groceries

but rolled into tubes

that feed another hunger

smells of mold, sweat, and frenzy

all tinge the stale air

with their special brand of decay

the screen door shrieks

as one more empty body

claws its way into this

depraved duplex dungeon

almost everything is scarce here

furnishings, food, friends, faith

but oh! the forgotten dreams

they lay scattered

over every surface

piled high in every nook

one could trip and break his neck

over all these abandoned dreams

Excellent imagery here; the sadness and hollowness of it all is quite palpable.

I wish for you happiness and a life of pure joy . The poem is so discriptive and painful . You deserve better anyone does . Thamks for letting us read your pain Marie

I thank you for the kind words, but I must say I have no personal experience with this kind of life. I am close to many people like this, however, and it is for them that I wrote this piece. Most have been able to overcome this particular demon, but there are still a few stuck there for now. All I can do for them is pray, write, and encourage.

the meaning of this write is very raw and full of dark fascination... the loss revealed here is reflected by the absence of "things"... but the true loss is the user himself... thanks for sharing

Thank you for taking the time to read. I was trying for that bleak feeling and it looks like it succeeded.

there is such a dark and dirty feeling to this... the grit feels like it is all over me... the imagery is amazing very descriptive... almost felt like i was there in all of the muck and now i might need a shower

Thanks for reading, Dano! I was definitely trying to capture that feeling, and trust me: I felt the same way trying to write it. I was hoping it would be worth it to get the message out there.

What a waste. There is so much promise lost in veins.up noses and up in smoke.

You said it! I know many people, unfortunately, who had to ultimately choose between jail, death, or quitting. Once you start this road, those become the only choices left. Thanks for reading!

Poetry is not the expression of personality but an escape from personality.
