Poem Commentary

Driving my sleeping girlfriend home from a trip, it suddenly struck me how much I loved her.

New Light

The motorway was ours-

Driving home or away, no one knew.

You were asleep, soundlessly, trusting;

I was full of love.

Ahead, tonight had begun to die

And tomorrow was readying to replace

A day that had been so right,

So full of love.

Glancing across at your slumped frame,

Full beams lit you for a second

And your sheer beauty startled me,

I crossed a lane.

I fingered your locks like a lullaby,

Then hit left with the same hand,

Indicating to no one but the new light

That I was turning around at the next exit.

Slipped into the quiet stream on the other side,

Driving away from the dawning day-

Today had been so right,

I wanted a few more miles of it.

Thank you Rita! I was going for a simplistic expression of love, so thank you :)

great job great write really honest and sweet my favortite part was "I wanted a few more miles of it". Because most people want every second o new love there is because that is the time when love is the most fun at the beginning.

Exactly right, I'm so glad you picked that out and were able to relate to it. And yes, its honesty comes from its simplicity, which is hard to do I find, to make a poem both simple and mature/interesting.

You live up to your potential, find the balance between what you want and what you need ... and love?, should fit just fine in-between. Be who you are and do not worry or give concern to what others expect or judge of you. My work? just have fun reading get a little something from it- not too much lol be well k

This held me from the 1st line to the very last and I was eager to see the end result . I felt the tenderness , the love, the longing when you fingered her locks of hair yet a sadness as well . I am looking forward to looking through more of your work. Exquisite piece

Yes, I am so glad you felt the sadness. I didn't want it to be sad, nor for that to be picked up by everybody, even as an undertone. But i found the subtly morose current ebbing in and out here and there was inescapable. I don't know whether it is insecurity at my vulnerability I inevitably show by loving someone so much (in terms of risks of being hurt), or whether it is down to the day ending reminding me nothing is forever. Perhaps it is both. Thanks so much anyway!

Poetry comes nearer to vital truth than history.
