    not pretty

am I the texture of my skin
    or blooming passion deep within
can love exist but not rely
on surface seen with jaded eye

I've lost the dewy glow of youth
replaced it with the light of truth
can love exist but not regret
what it cost to pay my debt

I was once a pretty girl
with flashing eyes and lips that curled
can love exist but not dismiss
for lack of tender maidens kiss

if the lights are kept down dim
my beauty can shine through this skin
can love exist but not neglect
    or battered package so reject

    could I ever be defined
by a heart of gold that pain's refined
can love exist but not deny
this broken heart its chance to fly

    is all am inside enough
    to compensate for time's rebuff
can love exist but not betray
the heart that gives itself away

I'm so thankful that you drew my attention to this. What a beautifully written piece that I think most of us girls can relate to very well, especially those of us who feel we've passed our "prime" and left youth behind. Awesome write!

very well written television has jaded our view that everyone has to always be young and beautiful. although, i wish we had been born old and get younger with age. :)

I am snapping my fingers for you... This was a very well written piece. It gently addresses the issue without being too forceful and yet your point comes accross loud and clear.

FANTASTIC.......PERFECT RHYMING LEADS THE WAY TO ONE HELL OF A POERFUL STATEMENT.....THIS IS ALL POETRY IS SUPPOSED TO DO.

Rhyming with forcefull soft beauty your way with words are unique here, yet this question still lies in my head without an answer from you.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.

Aristotle (384 BC-322 BC) Greek philosopher.
