Of All The Stars We Have Collected

Poem Commentary

A poem not based on real life events but real life emotions.

Of All The Stars We Have Collected

Of all the stars
we collected
I recall best
The single greatest
gift you gave me;
My initials
Etched upon
An all but
invisible Sun.

I could now gaze
upon it forever.
Whenever I should
Need think of you.

When we surveyed together
The heaven’s boldest embodiments,
All about us things seemed
To begin to glow, gleam,
Sparkle, and shine.

How we whirled about together
On the wings of those celestial chimes.
Only now am I left knowing
The ever too sweet taste of folly,
With a large hole as a reminder
In the left pocket
Of every pair of my pants.

But oh,
How we welled with surges;
That kept us waiting, burning,
Twisting, and turning.
All the while we whaled,
And howled madly,
Deep into the valley
Of the Hawks and the Owls.

Who did we believe we were
With our demand to grasp and know
All of Nature’s most grand
And preciously guarded secrets.
We were merely two souls possessed
With a desire for deep love and true wisdom.
In the end we never so much as touched
Nor attained either, given all our efforts.
What sheer folly it was, with our every attempt
Towards all the stars we tried to collect.

This poem embodies the folly of selfish love that seeks not comfort from within but instead by stealing together that which is outside oneself and forever unattainable.

For all those who have love and lost but retained thier own self-worth.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.

Aristotle (384 BC-322 BC) Greek philosopher.
