Poem Commentary

Inspired by one of the great poet friends and teacher to this site Mr. Peat. I was also watching one of the greatest movies of all time, Dead poet's Society, lol.

Oh Captain My Captain

Oh Captain my captain,
I am but a dead poet upon the night,
A seed of man yet a soul of the child of light.

Ye if I never wake upon the morrow,
Life’s bloom would have not been in sorrow.

Ye if death’s embrace flowers my ashes,
And the reaper steals away the very breath of my life,

I will go ever so quietly into the night,
For I raged upon the day…

I'm still finding the tone of this one, but assuming imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, this a a paen of praise for gifts of poet's past. Like watching a Victoria's Secret Party Re-run, the deja vu still entices. Breathless! Harv

Thank you my new friend for your very kind words of praise, you are correct the tone of this write as well as the meaning is a tribute to one of the greatest poets of his generation, Sir Arther Whitman, poet, philosopher, teacher, and pioneer of his time. I studied alot of old english poets and the style, wording, and form has influenced much of my work. Often I get people trying to correct me on a spelling error that is in just, since the word used would not be found in a modern english dictionary. Thanks again for the review and comments as they are always greatly appreciated and welcome! Purity of the soul, journey well!!! with grace and humility ANGEL

You're having me on surely, O Captain, My Captain was authored by Walt Whitman, very American, and never knighted by the Brits. However, Dylan Thomas is a different story, your inverted allusion to him at the end pays homage to an early 20th century Welsh poet, of both genius and reknown.

you are so right, I only wish i followed this rule more often, so many of my poems are lengthy, once my mind gets going in a rant and the emotions are flowing like water, it is hard to stop, LOL. With this poem I was trying to convey a thought, rather than an emotion, an ideal and philosophy, since I wasn't overwhelmed with emotion when I wrote this one, it is much more concise and thoughtout than many of my other writes, I hope you enjoyed! Thanks so much for reading and commenting, it is greatlty appreciated and always welcome! Purity of the soul, journey well!!! with grace and humility ANGEL

Your command of the language is superb. The sheer authenticity of Shakespearean spirit that you present in this piece is astounding in emotion, depth, structure and impact. This piece is brilliant!

Thanks for the review and kind comments my friend, this movie is one of my all time favs! Certainly the best poetic movie ever made, most movies are just entertainment, eye candy and dull to our minds thought. This is one of those rare movies that really make you think, feel, question, reality and society. Funny this movie was made in the 80's I think, was set in the 50's I beleive, but the moral of the story and the message of the point is as valid now as ever. I just tried to capture just a spark of this meaning in my poem. Purity of the soul, journey well!!! with grace and humility your friend ANGEL

Jay, where are the ratings? I have not seen any. This would be a grave mistake.

Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
