    Omen

After a long day now all alone

    Children asleep, husband isn't home

I turn on television to relax and unwind.

The movie Omen is on, I find.

So I with the story of devil's own son

I spend the evening; -nerves undone.

Then about the twenty second hour

I hear an unfamiliar sound in the night air.

    Steady.…Steady yourself old girl!

Slow your heart and mind unfurl.

The movie is over-shadowing your mind.

As I regain calm, -it returned a second time.

The sound of footsteps in the leaves.

Then something else indescribable; -fear feeds.

Then a scrubbing and rubbing against something.

With knees shaking the curtain I fling.

I peer through the window into the night

Not a person or anything in sight.

Now guilt begins to seep in my thought.

Enabled not what the dark power’s brought.

Have I given opening to unleash demons realm?

As to toss me to and fro like a ship without a helm.

“O Lord,” Hear my humble cry be my protection.

Drive the evil back and break any connection.

With flashlight in hand and the Lord’s prayer upon my lips,

I summons my strength to stroll into the nights eclipse.

With steps as mute as possible I journey toward the sounds.

Beats of my heart breaking my eardrums and lungs bound.

To my gratitude and relief I see the cattle lounging there.

Maybe demonic is not there or maybe it was the Lord’s care.

But my advice is be careful of windows you open lest,

You receive an evil and elusive unwelcome guest.

I worked at a movie theater that premeired this movie on June 6, 1976. Sixth month sixth day sixth year. Paid attendance for all showings that day was 666. Your poem took me back to that night.

The title grabbed me, and your words took me bake to first time I ever saw the move. In my mind, the music throughout scared me out of my mind, allowing me to conjure all kinds images and sounds that weren't there. Thank you for taking me to that time. Very well written poem!

Oooh, I know what you mean! When I was younger whenever I would see movies or read books of this type I couldn't shake them for days... You're right, some doors and windows should remain closed. Well written!

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
