    Poem Commentary

    This poem was written on the eve of the Winter Solstice of 2018 while I sat in my backyard after several hours of raking. I was watching many small birds feed from my feeeder and use the birdbath right next to it. I began to notice how at below forty degrees and almost in my mid fifttees I was feeling the weather deeper in my bones. Thus a poem began. I sought paper and the landscape gave forth the rest.

    Winter Solstice Eve

     

     

    I feel the afternoon cold 

    Take hold of my bones, 

    A little bit deeper 

    This mid December. 

     

    The smell of burning leaves 

    And the smoke mist 

    That covers me,

    I embrace this time, 

    With the ringing chimes

    Echoing throughout the hills. 

     

    Though the skies are dark

    The Eagles fly out 

    Expansive, above the array 

    Of tall barren Oak Trees. 

     

    The sullen lake below 

    Is cast to and fro, 

    By today’s Northern Winds.

    A preeminent sign 

    That the world’s design

    Informs Winter shall soon begin.
