Poem Commentary

I was watching the news right before I retired for the night, and when I couldn’t sleep these thoughts were written down… Seems as if everyone everywhere has a genealogical severed arm to their family tree; someone at some time in the family line died or has been wounded in war or from a violent crime – it’s the history of the world and it makes you think. If it affects you directly then most will somehow question why!!!

Pretty Bullets

Give me bullets and I will not make you a gun
I will but chew them up and spit the shells at your feet

Pretty bullets all lined in a row
Knock one over to see them fall one by one

Like acid, gun powder melts away the flesh
Why do our enemies arm themselves with the tools of war

The brave and the weak all line up as one, but someone brought a gun
With malice or just for fun

When the smoke dissipates
The lifeless pile upon themselves

God bless each and every soul that leaves a stone upon hallowed ground
I honor those who obey to protect

Though I will never understand the hatred of humanity

Nevertheless history mandates survival of the fittest
So I will strengthen myself to make a stand if I must

When it is up to me I will not be the one to provoke
Give me bullets and I will not make you a gun...

It is easier to walk away when no one has a weapon; if everyone were only armed with words!?

Yes an emotionally charged subject and too delicate; yes it can be interpreted in many ways; that was one of the many things I respected and appreciated - Pretty Bullets, well crafted. Peace, Light and Love.

I do love that closing line. It drives home the point not stated that many do not have the words they need to be happy and substitute force to achieve it, but lose any hope of ever getting there.

Words and Weapons - both must be controlled without aiming directly at the heart!!! Thx my friend

How true. How true. But weapons can only kill you once; words can keep on killing for all eternity.

Love the poem, and the sentiments , but as soon as I'd finished reading , reality confronted me, with violence on TV, violence in song, violence in cinema. If only as you say we were armed only with words - UTOPIA --- Naaaah , we will still find a way to mess up, find a way to commit atrocities on our neighbours with those same words that seem so benign. We are predators predisposed to be killers, with our forward facing eyes. -Ming

What a crazy mixed up world - yes reality has a sobering affect on us all minute by minute... forward facing eyes looking all around for the warning signs!!?

Forward facing eyes looking all around for the warning signs ! ! ? . . . NO . . . ! Forward facing eyes, .. the eyes of a predator . . .! -ming

its a nice piece of poetry, thought provoking. Yes the world would be a wonderful place if there was no hatred and no war. if human values are respected, and when man treats man as an equal. would appreciate your comments, on my poem ' gratitude to my teacher ' thank you.

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.

T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) American-English poet and playwright.
