Rose by the Sea`

Rose by the Sea

Somewhere faraway on a cliff overlooking the sea

Stands a small cottage of simple beauty

There, resides a beautiful young maiden

Who, early each morn, rises with the sun,

Casting open the shutters to gaze out over the sea,

As she steps to her stove to brew a pot of tea,

A gentle seabreeze wanders in from the shore,

Stopping to visit the fair maiden, it raps at her door.

"Rose'" The breeze whispers softly in her ear,

"Come away with me, come to the sea,

"Your aching heart, shall heal there.

"You shall fnd love, someone who will care."

Rose, once in love, with a sailor, young and shy

Who lived in the small fishing village nearby.

Planning to marry and live in that cottage

On the cliff, so high, overlooking the sea.

But, alas, that love was just not meant to be.

A storm brewed two short days before they wed

Taunted by that same breeze, it raised its evil head

The boat with it's crew disappeared in that storm

Leaving young wives and lovers forever to mourn..

As the years pass and our Rose withers as roses do,

There came a day late in Autumn, that was way past due.

After many years of wandering lost, out on the lonely sea

A phontom ship came staggereing into harbor, finally free.

The gentle breeze still enamored of Rose

Again blew itself across her door.

"Rose, " it whispered softly in her ear

Wanting to sea his love once more.

But, Rose had grown much wiser

in their many years apart

Now she was not so eager,

To give away her yearning heart

Starting with a love so meager

Yet to send him away would be cruel

Knowing no man wanted to play the fool,

Rose told him of another suitor,

Keeping secret that it was the wind.

Though feeling he had lost his amour,

Now a seasoned sailor,he professed his undying favor

That still tortured his heart for being away so long.

On bended knee, swore his love for no other.

A pleasant ending, it is true , it happens to so few.

The lovers still wed on the day they had chosen.

Just 40 years later, and as expected, the seabreeze,

Came uninvited, but left without making a stew.

Oh, how many lady-fairs have lost their true love to the briny sea, cry as they might from their lonely abodes.....some with no hope, and some with hope anew, are blessed by the roving waves of that watery brink..............So lovely......................g

anything for my friends. ... and I count you as a friend

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
