Scolding My Imagination

Scolding My Imagination

Seeing images, not knowing where I’ll take them
Scolding my imagination
I’m looking in the mirror
And it’s scary to see myself, so clear
I can’t bear it so I look away
My heart keeps beating faster
And my breath tries to catch up
Don’t know if this will last
Now calming down is tough
I don’t know what I’ll do
Or how I’ll feel
Lying in the dark
When, all of a sudden, I see a spark
Out of the corner of my closed eye
And my body jolts
I spring up from my bed
Arms up to block my head
But it’s silly
It’s all so infantile
And I lie back down and smile
But that’s when the creeps come in
If you always felt safe, you’d never win
When they know you’re feeling fine
Your life is on the line
They see that you’re okay
Then your blood they’ll drain away
You’re starting to unwind
A hiding place, they’ll find
And creep into your mind, your soul
They’ll take control
And you’ll feel your heart beat fast
And your hair stand on end
Waiting for it to pass
But it’s all part of their trend
They come and go, to keep you on your toes
They scratch and they bite
At brain cells, gray and white
They’re demons in your head
All blue and gray and dead
And while lying in your bed
You’ll see what lies ahead
They are your doubts of dreams
They are growls and screams

Just try to save face and pretend they’re not there
They only die when they can’t live anywhere
Keeping ourselves awake and alive are the only way these awful things can survive

Vivid verses! Voices in the mind! Great write!

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) American poet.
