Shattered
Shattered
I’m your daddy,
suppose to protect you,
this I can’t fix,
my sweet child,
so I stand here
rocked to the core
of my very being,
as the tears
well up in my eyes,
watching you
withering in pain
like glass
against concrete.
My thinking leaves me
no place to hide,
knowing I am unable
to soothe you or
secure you any peace,
I stand emptied
of all my strength,
as the shadow
of fear grips me,
purging me
of any bravado,
chaos comes swirling
making me weak
in the knees.
I grab the bed railing
holding on
for dear life,
begging that all this
will disappear,
I squeeze your hand
to hold back my tears
and silently pray.
