    Simple Wishes, Fulfilled Promises

    I never gave you flowers
    or sweets and chocolates
    nor spared you precious hours
    on fairly lavish dates.
I never sang you love songs
    or played you my guitar
    but promised you the seasons,
the Sun, the Moon, the Stars.

    I dared not offer something
    I do or don’t possess
if all its worth is passing
    like empty promises.
    Since I perceived these matters
    shall not your heart satiate,
I planned not just for hours
    but for a lifelong date.

    My pillows prove each morning
where all my nights were spent.
    Don’t they smell more assuring
    than fragrant flowers’ scent ?
    A quarrel close to bursting
    each time resolved creates
    a flavor far fulfilling
    than sweets and chocolates !

    No other timeless love song
    or fancy guitar strings
    enthrall you through the seasons
    than music my heart sings;
    for shining in abundance
    my love always abide
    which you reflect with radiance
to budding Stars we guide . . .

Unfulfilled promises is considered ungentlemanly while fulfilling promises is considered honest and honorable. This piece is a good example of modern romanticism.

Zaph~ if this is not still in the competition, you should re-enter it ! Truly a wonderful work, any woman worth her salt would love to hear! Beautiful, heart touching words! The the third stanza is my favorite! Kudos!

Just who are you? If you gave me this person. As a gift I will love you forever. This is really good.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
