Six Years to Forget

  • It's been years. . . And stepping back in feels like I've found a lost home 💜

Six Years to Forget

What an easy solution,
to move on,
to grow,
to forget.

It only took six years to forget
the comfort of a dark, quiet night,
the easy routine of the same roads home,
the silence of an ignorant, self-absorbed life,
the sweetness of an obedient girl,
the beauty of a sun's rise
and the peace of its set,
the thrill and excitement of the city,
the serenity of the country's isolation,
the simplicity of a child's fears,
the determination of an enduring community,
the irritation at having nowhere to go,
the harmony of not wanting to leave,
the exact speed to take the dirt roads,
the flight down the long stretches of highway,
the unease of the suffocating sounds and
structures of an urban life.

It only took six years to remember
the pain of abandoning a home,
the struggle of awakening,
the hopelessness in seeing a new world,
the loneliness in leaving,
the defeat in staying,
the gratefulness for poor choices,
the craving for better,
the weight of a burdened soul,
the strength in depression,
the love in a strong hug.

It only took six years to realize
the extent of my compassion,
the passion in my heart,
the prison I've traded for,
the whisper for more in my ear,
the appetite for adventure in my breast,
the courage to stand for someone all alone,
the spirit to demand change.

Oh, how we forget so much so quickly.
