    survival of the fittest

    within a stolen moment
    this silenced wordsmith breathes
    a heartbeat to remember
    all that she now grieves

    survival of the fittest
let the feeling take the fall
    grasping for that daily bread
    has made my spirit crawl

    I'm tired of surviving
    of somehow scraping by
    this desperation holds me down
when my heart longs to fly

I try to count my blessings
at the end of every day
    but half price toilet paper
    should not inspire "hooray"

what the hell am I doing here
    trying to shoulder the blame
    and pick up shattered pieces
    that only bring me shame

this is not the life I want
or the one I've tried to live
but I lied with an I love you
that I never had to give

my heart a cold and silent tomb
    my mind so self-deceived
    hard and dark and lonely
    my guilt goes unrelieved

    self-loathing leads to martyrdom
    my secret sacrifice
    everything I could have been
    twisted to device

and though I long to break away
from the chains of all I've known
    I'm shackled by obligation
    destined to walk alone

This self-incrimination has a real flow! Your syllabic meter is dead- on, paired with the rhyme scheme. Then, of course, your language dresses the message beautifully! Applause building!!

tenderpoison, Your message shows the strength of patience. It seems a trap has been set and the subject yearns desperately to escape. A labored poem that speaks minions. ginga

Hi .. I haven't visited your page (or any, for that matter) in a while, but I really enjoyed this. Easy to read and understand ... nice flow ... and, I could soooooo identify with it. Awesome. Thank You.

Ah those last two lines. Reminds me of an old quote - (Only enemies get to be honest because friends are too attatched to duty). Its like the longer the lie exists, the further back the path towards truth becomes. Maybe even lost. Fitting title. Seems everything has its price. Even honesty. Enjoyed the read.

Wow...doing the right thing but for whom...."whats good to you may not be good for you...and whats good for you may not be good to you"....Choices are made daily for the sake of children or a situation...but at some point you have to question is it right for you....great poem...Cher

Poetry is not the expression of personality but an escape from personality.

    T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) American-English poet and playwright.
