THE GREAT WALL

THE GREAT WALL

I built a wall from scraps of heartache

Lots of loneliness….a stupid mistake

Some vicious lies….a bit of cruel intent

Broken promises and a few rules bent

Sturdy it stood doing what I intended

Protecting my heart no longer needing mended

The scraps and left over pieces I used

Stood strong while being weathered and abused

Until one day it developed a crack

I was frantic to patch it for fear of attack

But then from over my sturdy wall

I heard a voice and I began to stall

I heard the offer of a helping hand

The suggestion of maybe using a new brand

"Build your wall from joy…a few smiles…and warm eyes"

"Build with kind words…compassion….and strong ties"

I listened intently to the words being spoken

Then I was reminded of how my heart was initially broken

Before building this wall my heart stood as an open door

To which I had keys but had never locked before

Until one day some one walked in whom I wanted to stay

I put a do not disturb sign on my heart that day

He made him self at home….unpacked his interest and desire

Fixed a cup of laughs and with his mind lit a fire

I was comfortable with him in my heart and mind

Until he left one day…..robbing me blind

He pawned my compassion and threw away my joy

Tore up my kind words and treated my smile as a toy

He undid the knots in all of my strong ties

And splattered red paint on my warm eyes

So I built a wall from scraps of heartache

Lots of loneliness….a stupid mistake

Some vicious lies….a bit of cruel intent

Broken promises and a few rules bent

What a sad tale, so beautifully told. Visit my poetry and you will see that I can relate to your plight, I think we all can. But we shouldn't give up hope, even if like love it is a four letter word.

I like this one I assume it's the great wall of China? it sounds very good and is very different from all the rest so this a good poem, it could be a good song all though Eart Wind and Fire have a version of the great wall but it's not the same, I'm into music I do know them. Keep writing you'll make it to where you want to be. grecowong@yahoo.com

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
