The Solid Wall of Night

Poem Commentary

The world of night and those "creatures" who inhabit it seems like it is literally a different world.

The Solid Wall of Night

Within a spare-change moment
the solid wall of night
dissolves to issue forth again
ghost-images of twilight.

Creatures of the dark now
are forced to hide away
to wait with nerveless patience
to sleep through another day.

In homes and cities and on farms
alarms and roosters crow
another day to beat is here
another row to hoe.

Creatures of the day now
are forced to raise their heads.
Most work, some play, some rule the day
some wish they'd stayed in bed.

The hours pass, for some they fly
for some they're simply done
leaving creatures of the day
to wait for another sun.

Within a spare-change moment
the solid wall of night
reforms again, restores again
the world of banished light.

I really enjoyed this. It is worded perfectly to bring forth the images of day and night. It's a favorite for me.

Harvey, this is lovely. I would say...you have two themes here, and I like the sort of, "redeeming the time" theme the best.

Poetry is not the expression of personality but an escape from personality.
