    Poem Commentary

well i wrote this in school about the immigrants coming to angel island....hope you all enjoy

    The Unknown Dream

    I step off the boat

    a smile on my face

people start to welcome me to angel island

children laugh and hug their mothers close

as the talk about the dreams they have in store

I walk through many door ways

as people lead me to the united states

I know here I will have a new life, become a new person

-But this doesn't seem real. This has to be a dream, it has to be-

-Just then the boat jerked, it was a dream-

I step off the boat, a smile on my face

then as I look around that happiness starts to fade to deep despair

I see children crying, people frowning

some get turned back, others are led down long narrow hallways

into rooms hat are so damp and dark you don't know where you are

they stay there for who knows how long

finally it is my turn to be asked the usual questions

they tell me to go wait somewhere else

-I pray to god that they will let me through-

    -my fate still unknown...-

Great poem you've got here! I love the ending especially, and the twist in the middle was unexpected. I ventured in, reading a happy poem, but it swerved into a depressing one. Amazing job, keep writing!

Sounds Like a bad trip through Ellis Island. Yet it is the plight of most immigrants in the history of the US. They are told one thing, and they are duped into a hard life in the new country. But the hope that remains there isn't allowed to be crushed.

    great point thank you

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

    Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
