WAR

A soldier in the night is ready.  He keeps his weapon by his side.  He keeps his heartbeat steady.  He is careful with his eyes.  If it wasn't for his brothers, he would be dead already. He is a father of two.  His daughter wants to be held by her daddy.  She pleads with him to stay home.  He replies Uncle Sam won't let me. Close your eyes and dream.  Daddy has to keep us free. Sleep well and I will handle everything. Cole can only close his eyes, to see her smiling.

Her name is Sarah. She is an E three. Her little brother Eric was diagnosed with cancer, stage three. She writes to him every day to see how bad things can be. Her mother said he misses her and holds her picture closely.  She wishes she could be there, to hold his hand and sing.  After all she has his name on a custom ring.  Sarah says, “sleep well my brother I'll pay for everything". She hopes to see him on his birthday sometime in the spring.

They awoke the sounds of shots ringing in the air.  Cole got pinned down in fear. The enemy was so near.  He prayed God would help, as Sarah appears. She pushed him to cave, as one shot ring in her ears.  The blood had Sarah in tears.   She says "Cole take this!" She gave him the ring, on it the brother she missed. “Tell him I tried". "Tell him my life wasn't meaninglessness". Cole held her till death, as she closed her eyes to rest. Cole replied, “Dream, I will handle everything".

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
