When it comes to you.

  • I've been away for a while but I'm back now. I'll be posting occasionally. Glad to see so many people I know are still here.

When it comes to you.

It's better if I just be quiet,
my words have a mind of their own;
I promised myself that I'd try it
but my head just can't leave it alone.
I know everything that I said
and I've given you good cause to doubt;
it all sounds alright in my head
then I speak and pure crazy falls out.
The only explanation that will do:
this only happens when it comes to you.
This boat that we're in just keeps rocking
and I try to sit down and be good,
but I'm so nervous when we are talking
that my mouth shoots my head in the foot.
I push you away with intention
then panic and reach out again;
if you're thinking I need intervention,
that I'm not entirely sane,
then give my inner devil his due;
this only happens when it comes to you.
I minimized this attraction;
I threw it down in the dust;
I called it a minor distraction;
I called you an endorphin rush.
I bared myself to my own nature
then covered in armor and thorns;
a difficult, contrary creature
constantly changing her form.
I don't blame you if you're really through;
this only happens when it comes to you.
I've ordered my thoughts with these verses;
I've given them structure and style.
I'm hoping they can undo curses,
bridge the distance of one thousand miles.
I take back my rude condescension;
my thoughtless and sweeping remarks,
I break down the walls of my prison;
drain the moat and remove all the sharks.
There's really nothing more that I can do;
this only happens when it comes to you.

What is your problem? It appears that you have one.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.

John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) Thirty-fifth President of the USA
