Who's Calling, Please?

Poem Commentary

This was for an assignment about looking at old things in new ways.

Who's Calling, Please?

no one can leave a call unanswered
shrewish ring, shrill and persistent
it pulls us in like gravity, inexplicable and certain
the shiny black handset smeared with greasy fingerprints
strong steel cord segmented like a worm
plexiglass shields on either side
wearing graffiti like a cloak
RC + TL = 4EVA
and other unknowable hieroglyphics
the coin slot's narrow abyss
the metal shelf below, scarred from battle with the public
no one can leave a call unanswered

In all the years there were pay phones, I can't remember using them more than a couple of dozen times, if that. But it was always funny to see Alan Funt on Candid Camera get apay phone ringing and see what he could entice the unssuspecting to do. Harv

To have great poets there must be great audiences too.
