Poem Commentary

i wrote this poem for my english class and it's a true poem.

you will always be my dad but never my father

You'r a stranger to me
if i saw you in the street
i probably wouldn't even recognize your face
i guess it would all depend on the time and place
when i was younger
i used to stay up thwe whole night crying
Id be thinking and wondering
if you were even trying to reach me
Do you even understand all the hurt i went through
because of you
You said see you next week
but you never came
at the time i really didnt think anything of it
but as time went by and the week turned into weeks
which turned into months
then progressed into years
the whole time i couldn't help
but shed so many tears
i was never able to tell you
my hopes, dreams, and fears
Didn't think i would remember did you
How could i, i was only five
Had me thinknig how could you
and that all you did is lie
see i didn't understand
how some man could come into my life
and only be there for a moment
then leave
bet you didn't know that that led me to believe
that it was my fault
it was me that made you leave
that i was to blame
i felt so ashamed
waiting for you to come back to me
I wanted so much to tell you
"Im Sorry"
But eventually i grew up and realized the truth
that it wasnt me that made you leave
it was you
i can't help but feel hurt, anger and pain
nevertheless, i also have a lot to gain
i only have a few questions that i deserve answers to
Why did you leave and make me fell so insignificant
did u hate me
did you think if you came around a few times you could conceal it
why didnt you tell me
that i had a half brother
the only reason i know is because on my mother
i guess you must have thought
why bother
you'll always be my dad,
but never my father

This is heartbreaking. I'll never understand how a man could abandon his child. Being a parent is the greatest thing that could happen to someone and some people could toss that gift aside is something that will never make sense to me. I truly wish I could take your pain away. I know those are just words, but if it were possible, I would do it. *hugs*

I can honestly relate on every possible level. My dad walked out right after I was born so i have no memory of him. But that anger gives you the strength to move on...great write. -sk8

Keep writing from your heart. Having the courage to write your truth gives others a connection to the sincerity of your words. You write with a passion to express your pain, hurt and life experiences making your work a 10 as it grasps the heart strings of others knowing they are witnessing your pain and wanting to hear you move through it to a lighter heart.

The poet is a very deep thinking person and taking much care on dad and father. I like the poetic way of placing the words to express the pain in mind. A very good poem which has touched my mind- ayyan

Well done. I can feel your pain through your work. You have a talent for expression. I adopted two boys that were abandoned by both their mother and father. Both of them are grown up and doing great. Life presents a different road for each of us. We just need to hang on and ride out the bad times and cherish the good ones. I hope to read more of your work when you reveal your true self. Keep the faith kid, you have talent.

Poetry is not the expression of personality but an escape from personality.

T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) American-English poet and playwright.
