    Poem Commentary

When I was young, a pre-teen, there was a young man who drowned at Cotton Mill Lake. I have no true knowledge of the event, and, am not even sure of his name. I just liked the sound of his name and was inspired by the events as I envisioned them.

    When Young Dreams Die

When Johnny Canfield was just seventeen
He was six feet, five and raw-boned-lean
If problems arose, Johnny was slow to anger
Johnny had a keen mind that sensed danger
When one of his friends was in frantic need
He would not tarry, but was swift to heed

His head was full of coal black hair
That was combed back from his face with flair
Saturday night, at the dance with a pal
He sought out Judy, his very best gal
Arms 'round her waist he hoped this moment could last
Then Judy would swoon as he held her fast
People watched as the young lovers swirled
Two people lost in their own little world

When the clock struck midnight, the dance was done
John and Judy drove to the lake to be alone
Along the lake road were parked cars full of steam
Taking their place among scattered love's dream
John and Judy discussed their future together
To work on the problems they had to weather
They swore their love with one, long passioate kiss
In all of her life, Judy had never known such bliss
Suddenly,  Johnny jumped to his feet, feeling so alive
Sure their problems were solved he went for a dive

As his head entered the water Judy drew in a gasp
In the dimness floated a section of a tree collapse
Friends later were told that his neck had been broken
Stunned how suddenly life was gone, no words were spoken
So shocking the story of the death of their friend
That Judy was forgotten, never thought of again
At the cemetery, I say goodbye, my mother is, now, also gone
Her name was Judy and she was proof that life does go on

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.
